Bill's duck decoys
Hand Carved • Collectible • Decorative • Scaled for Display
River Crafts is a collection of wood carvings inspired by the waterfowl and fish that visit the Mid Atlantic region. Anchoring this collection is the work of the late William (Bill) Coleman. Bill was a Chestertown native who learned the craft of decoy carving from his neighbor, the highly respected decoy maker Charles Joiner. Bill concentrated his work on decorative carvings (scaled down decoys) that easily fit on a book shelf, end table, or mantel. He produced thousands of pieces over a 50 year span. When Bill retired from his career at Washington College, he travelled to regional craft shows to display his work. In addition to migratory waterfowl, He began to produce additional pieces such as shorebirds, fish carvings, and country folk art to complement his displays.
Upon his passing, his workshop in Worton, MD was full of unfinished work, patterns and parts. Today his son Paul has picked-up the carving tools, sandpaper, paints and cleaners and is refurbishing the remaining collection along with producing his own work. Hopefully you will find a spot in your home or boat that a product of River Crafts will enhance and remind you of the region’s beauty.
